Danville, VA – Peace College was able to hang
with Averett University for the first 30-minutes of
the game, but came out on the losing end to a fast improving
Lady Cougar basketball team 55-43 on Sunday afternoon.
Peace tied the game up with :24 seconds to go in the
first half after a Lauren Seeger jumper, but Averett’s
Nikki Huffman snuck a lay up past the Pacer defense
as time expired to put the Cougars up by two heading
into intermission.
The second half proved to be much of the same for the
first ten minutes. The Pacers were able to tie the game
up less than a minute into the second period when Seeger
hit a lay up, but Peace could never gain the lead for
the remainder of the game. The Pacers went shot for
shot with the Cougars, but Averett was able to go on
an 8-0 run midway through the half to put them up by
nine, a lead that they would not lose.
Averett extended their lead to sixteen
with five minutes to go in the game after another 8-0
scoring run. The Pacers could not recover and dropped
their seventh straight conference game.
Peace was led by Christy Freeman who posted nine points,
but Lauren Seeger kept the Pacers close scoring eight
points while snagging eleven rebounds in twenty minutes
of action. Seeger missed recording a double-double by
one field goal, but has been playing well for Peace.
Guard Brittany Lynn chipped in eight points to round
out the Pacers’ scoring leaders. Averett (3-12
overall, 2-5 USA South) had two scorers in double digits.
Jasmine Adams and Kristen Kozar both pitched in ten
points in the winning effort for the Cougars.
Peace will travel back to Raleigh and prepare to host
North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Pacers (6-11
overall, 0-7 USA South) will have the opportunity to
snap their seven game conference skid when the Bishops
come to town. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 PM in the
Hermann Center.
