Raleigh, NC--Peace
College rallied past the Avenging Angels tonight in
front of 235 cheering fans (62-61). The Pacers jumped
out in front of the Angels leading by as many as 7 in
the early minutes of the game. Both teams fought back
and forth with strong defensive stops and solid shooting.
Meredith headed to the locker room at the half up by
2.
The Avenging Angels controlled the
first 10 minutes of the second half. Peace tied the
score twice but could not regain an advantage. At the
10:28 mark junior guard Christy Freeman (Lumberton,
NC/Lumberton) hit a 3-pointer off a pass from teammate
sophomore guard LeAnne Horne (Monroe, NC/Parkwood) to
bring her team within 1 point and churn the momentum
of the game. The Angels countered to go up by 7 points
at 7:25. At that moment the Pacers began a 9-0 run to
go up by 2 with 5:22 left in the game.
Meredith's Amanda Street (Princeton,
WV/Princeton) nailed 2 key free throws for the Angels
to tie up the game at 4:14. Peace turned the ball over
to give Nicole Hall (Raleigh, NC/Wakefield) a jumper
and her team the lead.
Peace College challenged again with
a strong drive and smooth layup by sophomore guard Candra
Hill (Clinton, NC/Clinton). Hill tied the score for
the 8th in the game. The Pacers continued to play solid
defense and scored necessary free throws down the stretch.
Sophomore forward Brenna Mickey (Winston-Salem, NC/North
Forsyth) swished her 2 free throws with 36 seconds to
go putting the Pacers up by 2 points.
The Angels sophomore guard Brittany
Cornelius (Rockwell, NC/East Rowan) missed 2 free throws
under tired legs. Peace rebounded the shot to bring
the ball back to the offensive end for another free
throw by Freeman to go up by 3. The Angels fought back
and scored a goal by forward Whitley Turner (Wilmington,
NC/Eugene Ashley) with just a few seconds remaining.
Hill was fouled in the backcourt and
missed both leaving a chance for the Angels. But junior
forward Brittany Lynn (Raleigh, NC/North Raleigh Christian)
earned an offensive rebound to run the final seconds
off the clock.
Lynn led the Pacers with 15 points
and 7 rebounds in the win. Freeman added 14 points and
4 steals. Horne also scored in double digits with 12
points and 4 rebounds. She recorded 2 steals in the
game.
This was the Pacers seventh win of
the last 9 against Meredith. The Angels lead the series
overall 9-15.
Come back to the Hermann Center Thursday
night for a 7:00pm tip-off with the Monarchs of Methodist
