Raleigh, NC--Peace
College opened the season tonight with the Annual Jackie
Ammons Memorial Tournament hosting Salem College of
Winston-Salem, NC, Bennett College of Greensboro, NC
and Simmons College of Boston, MA. The women's college
tournament proved exciting with the first game going
to the Spirits of Salem College over the Belles of Bennett
48-44. Sophomore Casey Jones of Salem College led with
a game-high 18 points, 2 blocks and added 9 rebounds.
Sophomore Alexandrea Ervin added 13 points and 4 assists
for the Spirits. Keynetta Johnson and ShaRhonda LaBoard
of Bennett recorded 13 points each in the loss. Asia
Smith grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 8 points.
The Peace College Pacers join Salem
in the Championship game tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm
in the Hermann Student Center after defeating the Sharks
of Simmons College 77-48. The Pacers led a fast-paced
game carrying the momentum much of the night. Each player
in tonight's thirteen-person squad averaged over 15
minutes of playing time. The young team carries 8 underclassmen
who proved they are very capable of handling pressure
situations during tonight's win.
Leading tonight's final game was sophomore
Brenna Mickey of Winston-Salem, NC. Mickey scored all
13 of her points in the second half. She added 3 rebounds
in the game as well. Junior point-guard Christy Freeman
of Lumberton, NC recorded 12 points and led with 6 rebounds
in the win. Junior Brittany Lynn added 10 points and
5 rebounds in the first half.
Join the Pacers tomorrow in the tournament's
final day of competition. Bennett and Simmons face-off
at 1:00pm in the Consolation Game. Peace and Salem follow
with a 3:00pm tip-off. See you on the sidelines!
