Raleigh, NC--Peace
College teamed up with Greensboro College in support
of the National Fastpitch Association's StrikeOut Cancer
initiative to raise money and awareness on behalf of
the American Cancer Society. The unfortunate rainy weather
limited spectators and dampened the activities set for
the day. Thanks to the fans who persevered and lasted
until the clouds cleared and made way for the sun!
The teams split today's double header
with the Pride capturing game one 5-3 and the Pacers
claiming game two 6-2. Peace improved to 25-15 overall,
11-7 in conference play to close the regular season
in fifth place. Greensboro improved to 21-15-2 overall,
11-6-1 USA South.
Greensboro took an early 1 run lead
in the first with a single to left from Nikki Wilborn
who scored off a Pacer error. Peace matched the Pride
with an RBI single from Joanie Blevins (Thurmond, NC/East
Wilkes). The Pride had a flurry of activity at the plate
in the third inning to add 2 runs to the board and continued
their momentum to the fourth. Peace allowed 2 more runs
with 2 more errors.
The Pacers fought back with a double
to center from Holly Braswell (Raleigh, NC/Garner) in
the sixth to advance Lindsey Moore (Clayton, NC/Clayton)
home and hope to start a Pacer rally. Two fly balls
ended the run. Three outs in three batters placed the
Pacers back in the dugout for a final push to threaten
the lead of the visitors. Jessica Hogan (Denton, NC/Southwestern
Randolph) doubled deep into center field to rally her
team. Ashley Stansbury (Rougemont, NC/Northern Durham)
grounded out and moved Hogan into scoring position.
Blevins hit a 2-out single to left to score Hogan, but
a strikeout from Tiffany DeLeone (Clinton, NC/Louisburg)
ended the threat.
Peace regrouped during the break and
came out strong to take an early 2-run lead in game
2.Hogan advanced on a walk and K Moore hit a home run
to left field to put the Pacers on the board. The Pride's
Jessica Clack reached first on a Pacer error and scored
Greensboro's first run of the game. Both teams went
scoreless in the third. Peace sealed the win in the
fourth with a 3-run rally backed by Stansubury's 2-run
homer to left center field. Stephanie Monette (Conway,
SC/Newberry College) allowed only 1 earned run to lead
the Pacers to victory and earn her 13th win of the year.
Peace plays next at the USA South
