Raleigh, NC--After
the rain finally subsided and the courts began to dry,
the Pacers opened up their first match in over a week
under cold and windy conditions. Peace edged past the
Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College 5-4 in today's league
match.
Both doubles pairs soundly defeated
their opponents to open the match. Number one Pacers
Lauren Marion (Greensboro, NC/Southeast Guilford) and
Ella Dickens (Sanford, NC/Western Harnett) finished
8-4 over Mary Baldwin's Caitlin Crowe and Dasha Caron.
Lucy Mauney (Southern Shores, NC/Manteo) and Carol Ann
Duke (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury) handled Anna Grazynska
and Frances Webber 8-2 to take a 3-0 match lead. The
Squirrels forfeited the third doubles match due to injury.
Mauney completed a quick victory at
the number 4 singles spot 6-1, 6-1 over Caron. Dickens
added a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Grazynska to secure
the Pacer victory. Duke started off strong in her match
at number five only to let her opponent gain momentum
and win set one. Duke rallied to force a tie-breaker
in the second set but could not close the win. Marion
took an early lead winning the first set 6-1. Her opponent
Nicole Kroiner fought back forcing a third set with
a 6-2 victory. Kroiner maintained control topping Marion
in the third set 6-3 to take the match.
The Pacers continue their home stretch
hosting Methodist University Tuesday, April 8 at 3:30pm
in a rescheduled match. The Monarchs lead the league
6-0 and rank tenth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's
Atlantic South Region. Join us for this final home match
of the season as we honor the graduating seniors Lucy
Mauney and Ella Dickens. See you on the sidelines!
