Simonson named Men's Cross Country coach

Raleigh, N.C. - William Peace University Director of Athletics Kelly Johnson announced that Michelle Simonson will serve as the university's first men's cross country coach. A 2006 graduate, Simonson currently serves as the university's head women's cross country coach, a position she will continue to hold while leading the men's cross country team. Simonson will be responsible for enhancing overall awareness of the university's collegiate cross country program, as well as leading the recruitment process of prospective student-athletes for the 2012-2013 men's and women's cross country teams.

"To serve as head coach for both the men's and women's cross country teams of William Peace University is an honor," said Simonson. "As a former college athlete on this very same campus, I understand the mindset of these students and the desire to succeed as a student-athlete. I hope that my role will help guide them through success both on and off the field."

"The responsibility that lies with the head cross country coach could not be better suited for Michelle," said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University. "Michelle has a passion for students that radiates, and she thrives off watching students excel. One of her greatest assets is her ability to take the reality of where a student currently performs and challenge and motivate them into the reality of where there potential lies as individuals, as a team and as contributors of this community."

As a student, Simonson received the 2006 Outstanding Graduate award, the Scholar Athlete award and the athletic department's Frazier Cup, annually awarded to the individual who best exemplifies the characteristics of a student-athlete.
