Raleigh,
NC – The Peace College softball team started the season with
a win, before falling in the second game of the double header to
Guilford College on Sunday afternoon to officially open the
softball season.
In the first game it was the Quakers who got on the scoreboard
first in the top half of the second inning. First baseman Kelly
Hale took Joanie Blevins fast ball deep and out of the ball park to
put the visitors up 1-0. Peace would answer in fine fashion. Holly
Braswell would match her first base rival and start the inning off
by hitting a ball that even Wachovia Park could not hold giving the
junior her first home run of the season to tie the score up
1-1.
After Guilford was able to post another run in the top of the third
Peace went on a scoring rampage. The Pacers would score four runs
in the bottom of the third thanks to a Kenni Seagroves two run
double to take a commanding 5-2 lead. The Quakers would take the
lead back in the top of the fifth by scoring three runs, setting up
Seagroves for some late game, early season heroics. Lauren Pleasant
knocked in a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, then
it was Seagroves who hit a double in the bottom of the seventh
sending Ashley Stansbury across the plate to give Peace the 7-6
victory in game one.
The Pacers would not enjoy the same success in game two. The
Quakers used a four run seventh inning to pull ahead of the Pacers
and give them the 8-2 win. A few Pacers shined in the two game set.
Kenny Seagroves was 2 for 3 in the first game with two doubles and
three RBI’s, while Ashley Stansbury was 3 for 4 in game one.
Lauren Pleasant got the win for the Pacers by coming in as relief
of Joanie Blevins. Stansbury kept the bat on the ball and was 2 for
3 with an RBI in the night cap, but took the loss from the
mound.
Peace moves to 1-1 on the season and will take six days off before
they host Christopher Newport University on Saturday. First pitch
is scheduled for 1:00 PM and the game will mark the first USA South
Conference contest for both teams.
