Peace Softball Drops Pair to Christopher Newport
Raleigh, NC
– The Peace Pacer softball squad dropped a home double header
to visiting Christopher Newport University on Saturday in USA South
Conference action 0-9, 2-6. The Captains were able to stay
undefeated on the early season, including a 2-0 record in USA South
Conference play by defeating the Pacers.
Peace could only muster one hit in the first game, while CNU was
able to scatter five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead
early on in the contest. The lead was too much for the Pacers to
overcome and the Captains used their early success to go onto
victory 9-0 in game one.
The Pacers again found trouble getting on the scoreboard in game
two. The Captains were able to strike first, this time again using
a five run inning to jump ahead of the Pacers 5-0 in the fourth
inning. Peace was able to break up the shut out in the bottom of
the fifth when Summer Evans hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to
bring in Ashley Weathersbee who had advanced to third base after
walking to start the inning. Weathersbee made it around the bases
thanks to a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.
Peace pitcher Lauren Pleasant helped her own cause in the bottom
of the sixth inning when she took a Kristen Bruce fastball deep to
center field for a home run. Pleasants’ deep ball cut into
the Captains’ lead 5-2, but it was too little, too late as
CNU was able to put another run on the board in the seventh to take
a 6-2 victory.
The losses drop Peace to 1-3 (0-2 USA South) on the year, while
the Captains stay perfect at 4-0 (2-0 USA South). The Pacers will
be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Winston Salem to
face Salem College. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00
PM.
