Peace Softball Goes 1-2 At East Coast Challenge Rain Delay Puts a Damper on Weekend
Florence, SC
– After two straight days of rain, the sky finally cleared in
Florence and the East Coast Challenge was finally able to get
underway on the last scheduled day of the tournament. Peace College
was scheduled to play 3 games on Friday and 2 on Saturday, much
like the other attending teams, but ended up playing 3 games on
Saturday. The Pacer club went 1-2, loosing to Huntingdon College of
Alabama 3-0 in game one, defeating USA South Conference opponent NC
Wesleyan College in a non-conference game 3-0 and then loosing to
LaGrange College of Georgia 6-0 in the night cap.
In game one, Huntingdon scored three runs on eight hits and one
error as Peace could not find the plate and ended the contest
without any runs, three hits and one error. Freshman short stop,
Summer Evans had two of the three Peace hits with a single up the
middle and a double hit to deep center field. Junior third baseman
Kenni Seagroves singled to center field for the third hit. Freshman
pitcher, Ashley Stansbury took the loss from the mound for the
Pacers, dropping to 5-4 on the season.
In game two, Peace was paired against USA South Conference foe, NC
Wesleyan College. The Battling Bishops connected for five hits but
never crossed the plate leaving nine runners on base at the end of
the game. Peace only connected on three hits but scored all three
runs on four Bishop errors. Ashley Stansbury had two hits, singling
up the middle and to left field. Junior second baseman, Joanie
Blevins picked up the other Peace hit singling with a shot to left
field. Junior first baseman, Holly Braswell scored the first Peace
run in the bottom of the second inning on an error by the NC
Wesleyan first baseman. Peace would not score again until the
bottom of the sixth inning as Summer Evans scored on
Stansbury’s single to left field, as Stansbury picked up an
RBI. Blevins would also score on an error by the left fielder in
the same play. Senior pitcher, Lauren Pleasant picked up the win
from the mound advancing to 5-1.
In the night cap, the Pacers met up with LaGrange College who
scored six runs on eight hits and four Peace errors. Peace
didn’t score, only connecting on three hits. Seagroves,
Blevins & Stansbury each picked up a single for the Pacers.
Stansbury took the loss from the mound dropping to 5-5 on the
season.
The Pacers dropped to 15-8 overall, still 1-3 in the USA South.
Peace will resume conference play next week traveling to
Greensboro, NC to take on the Pride of Greensboro College who are
currently undefeated in conference play. The first game of the
double header is slated to start at 2:00 pm.
