Softball Sweeps Opening Series
Raleigh, NC -- The Peace College (2-0) softball team swept today's opening series with Shaw University (0-4) winning both five-inning games, 14-0 and 16-4.
The Pacers opened game one with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, including a two-run homer from senior pitcher Ashley Stansbury. Tatum Townsend hit a long double in the third scoring three more to give Peace a seven-run lead. Centerfielder Ashely Guman scored Townsend on a single up the middle. Guman stole second to get in scoring position for Morgan Weathington to knock her in with her solo hit on the game.
Peace scored five more in the bottom of four to seal their first win of the season.
Game two played much like the first. Shaw pitcher Aerial Sanders struggled to find a rhythm and helped Peace score eight runs with seven walks in the first. Lindsey Moore crushed the ball to center for the only hit of the inning.
The Pacers picked up four more hits in the bottom of two scoring six. Amanda Rothwell singled down the leftfield line. Teammate Kasie Moore lined one to left field moving Melissa Williams to second, who advanced on a walk, and Rothwell to third. Townsend walked in a run before Lindsey hit another single scoring two more. Aggressive base running put Peace in position to close the inning up by 14.
Shaw made a run in the fourth with two long homeruns. Stephanie Simmons regained composure and completed the inning with four runs on the board for the Bears.
Four more walks from Shaw and second hit from Kasie pushed Peace up two more to seal the win.
Stansbury earned her first win of the season with eight strikeoutsand two hits in four innings. First-year Kendra Yearick opened her career with a win in game two. She recorded six trikeouts, two hits, and one base on balls in 3.1 innings pitched.
Peace continues a six game weekend with a Noon doubleheader Saturday versus USA South foe Greensboro College. The team then travels to Guilford Sunday for a series with the Quakers slated to begin at 1:00 pm. See you on the sidelines!
