Dobbins Wins 200th

Raleigh, NC – Peace College Head Softball Coach Charlie Dobbins earned his 200thwin in today’s doubleheader with USA South foe Averett University (5-12, 3-3 USAS).  The visiting Cougars held a seventh-inning Peace rally in game one to win 7-5, while the Pacers (13-10, 2-2 USAS) took game two 3-2.

The Pacers held an early one-run advantage in the opening game in part to aggressive base running from Courtney Long who advanced to first on a walk.  Morgan Weathington moved her to second on a sacrifice.  Long stole third and then scored while teammate Amanda Rothwell was caught in a rundown headed to second.

After holding the Cougars scoreless in the top of the second, the Moore twins each earned one of three hits on the day.  Both were left on base at the end of the frame.

The infield started to unravel in the top of two allowing one run to score.  Averett earned six more in the fifth and sixth innings, including two homers and two Pacer errors.

Peace made a valiant effort in the bottom of seven to challenge AU.  Kasie Moore walked in the leadoff position.  Sister Lindsey moved her to third on a double to right.  Allison Gilmore dumped the ball in short centerfield to earn her first career RBI-single.  Long hit a single through the middle but was caught trying to pick up another base.  Weathington drove in Gilmore on a RBI-double but was left on base with the next at-bat short two runs.

Senior pitcher Ashley Stansbury (5-5) did her job in game two allowing just two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.  She helped her team hold the Cougars scoreless during the first five innings.  Averett rallied in the top of six with two runs on three hits, but Stansbury struckout the final three batters in the top of seven holding the winning run at third.

Peace hosts Meredith College Sunday, March 28, for the pairs' Strike Out Cancer game as part of the National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation's breast cancer awareness initiative.  Grand Slam USA will sponsor a raffle during the game, and all monies collected will go to the American Cancer Society.

Fans can come early to join in the tailgate festivities sponsored by the Peace College Campus Activities Board.  Lunch and pregame fun will be located on the lawn between New Res and the field beginning at 11:00 am.  See you on the sidelines!
