Ferrum Sweeps Peace in Softball DH

Ferrum, VA -- The Ferrum Panthers swept visiting Peace in today's USA South doubleheader with scores 6-1, 5-2.  The Pacers earned 11 hits on the day but suffered seven errors in the field.

Morgan Weathington picked up one of her four singles in the first frame of game two but was left on base.  The Panthers notched three runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame with the help of two infield Pacer errors.

Senior pitcher Ashley Stansbury led off the second inning with a homerun for Peace's only run on the game.  Stansbury (5-6) took the loss in the circle allowing seven hits for two earned runs, including two strikeouts.

Game two opened much the same way with Weathington advancing to first on a walk.  She stole second and scored on a muffed throw.

The Panthers took advantage of Pacer pitcher Stephanie Simmons in the bottom of the frame with five runs on four hits, including two homers.  Two more infield errors added to the Ferrum rally.

Peace catcher Melissa Williams started a seventh-inning rally with a lead-off single.  Courtney Long entered as her pinch runner and managed to steal second, advance to third on a passed ball, and scored on another single from Weathington.  The Panthers sealed the 5-2 win leaving two Pacer runners scoreless.

Peace hosts cross-town rival Meredith College Sunday in a 1:00 pm doubleheader at Wachovia Athletic Park.  This marks the team's Strike Out Cancer event for 2010.  Grand Slam USA will sponsor a raffle with monies going to the American Cancer Society, the PC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will sell "kisses for kids" as part of their Pennies for a Purposecampaign for Duke Children's Hospital, and Peace's Campus Activities Board opens the day with the softball tailgate event, including lunch on the lawn in front of New Res dorm.  Pregame fun begins at 11:00 am.  See you on the sidelines!
