Softball Sweeps Baldwin; Tournament Pairings Set

Staunton, VA -- Peace College (17-20, 6-12 USAS) softball earned two much needed wins today at Mary Baldwin (2-35, 0-18 USAS) to close out the conference season.  The Pacers defeated the Fighting Squirrels 2-0 in game one and sealed game two 15-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The two wins positioned Peace for a seventh-ranked finish in the USA South.  The Pacers will open the conference tournament Friday, April 16, paired up with #10 Mary Baldwin in the opening round.  Link here for the official 2010 tournament website.

Senior pitcher Ashley Stansbury earned her seventh win of the season in today's game one on 10 strikeouts, allowing seven hits. 

Peace got on board first in the top of the fifth.  Sophomore Allison Gilmore singled to center field and stole second.  Courtney Long scored Gilmore on an RBI-double to left, the first of her two doubles on the day. 

In the next inning, the Pacers scored the second and final run with aggressive base running by pinch runner Candy McDanel.  Stansbury advanced to first on an error and McDanel stepped in to run.  She stole second and rounded to third.  Amanda Rothwell earned the winning run on an RBI-sacrifice.

PC maintained control into the top of game two earning six runs on four hits with the help of four MBC errors.  Long led off with her second double on the day and the first of three Pacer doubles in the frame.  Melissa Williams and Stansbury earned the other two.

Williams and Kasie Moore propelled Peace to an early win with a pair of doubles in the top of the fourth.  Both scored as part of a 10-run advance in the final two innings of the game.

Rookie pitcher Kendra Yearick earned her tenth win on the season allowing just one hit with five strikeouts and a walk.

The Pacers wrap-up the regular season Monday, April 12, hosting Shaw University for Senior Day.  The team will celebrate the four-year contribution of Ashley Stansbury during the doubleheader event.  See you on the sidelines beginning at 3:00 pm at Wachovia Athletic Park!
