Pair of Homers Seals Non-League Sweep
Raleigh, NC -- The Peace College softball team closed the 2010 regular season with a pair of non-league wins over Shaw University. Senior Pacer Ashley Stansbury clinched game one with a three-RBI-homer to win 10-2 in five innings. Melissa Williams notched a walk-off three-run home run in the sixth inning of game two to give the Pacers an 8-0 victory.
Stansbury put Peace on the board in the bottom of the first frame with a sacrifice fly to left.
The next six runs of the game came in a Pacer rally in the bottom of the fourth. Peace notched eight hits in the frame, including doubles from Amanda Rothwell and Courtney Long and Stansbury's home run. Lindsey Moore, Lindsey Haver, Morgan Weathington, Kasie Moore, and Rothwell each added a single.
Shaw put two on board in the top of the fifth with a pair of hits and a Pacer throwing error.
Peace kept the bats moving in the bottom of five to end the game early with an eight-run advantage.
Stansbury earned her eighth win on the season allowing five hits with one earned run and eight strikeouts.
First-year pitcher Kendra Yearick pitched three perfect innings in game two to help Peace carry the sweep. Hannah McLeod entered in the top of the fourth to complete the shutout with only two hits granted to the Bears.
The Pacers opened the game with a five-run rally in the second inning on six hits. In the third Rothwell singled through the right side and scored on a wild pitch.
Moore, K singled to center in the fifth and moved to second on a bunt single from pinch hitter Sophia Jacobs. Candice McDanel earned an RBI-single scoring Moore, K.
Williams sealed the win in the sixth as Peace heads into the conference tournament at the end of the week.
