Raleigh, NC - The Peace College basketball team dropped their season opener tonight to visiting Salisbury University 73-63. The teams paired off in the nightcap of the Pacers Tenth Annual Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament. Salem College will faceoff the Sea Gulls in Saturday's championship game after dominating Bennett College in round one.
Peace led by as many as seven points in the first half but shared the lead with SU on six occasions. Neither team maintained momentum in the first period, and the Pacers entered the break up by two on a layup from Karissa Herring.
The teams continued to exchange points early in the second period with no certain leader. Salisbury's Kylie Hall, who scored a team-high 19 points, ignited a 10-0 run for her team on a layup with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation. Peace charged back with jump shot from LeAnne Horne followed by a quick pass inside from Herring to Rebecca Davis for two more. But 4-13 shooting from the stripe kept Peace from getting any closer.
Herring led all with 22 points, adding four steals and five rebounds. Horne finished with 15 points and four each of steals and rebounds. Junior Margaret Minton scored 9 of her 11 points in the first half, including 2-2 from the arc. Minton and Davis pulled down six rebounds apiece to led Peace.
SU's Hall completed her double-double with 15 rebounds. Teammate Janay Johnson added 13 in spite of playing only nine minutes in the second period due to foul trouble.
The Pacers open tomorrow's final day of tournament action with Bennett College at 1:00 pm. The championship follows at 3:00 pm. See you on the sidelines!
