Raleigh, NC - The Peace College (2-3, 0-2 USAS) basketball team lost their second consecutive conference game today against the USA South's top preseason pick Christopher Newport University (5-0, 2-0 USAS). The 81-54 final score fails to show the aggressive battle between the Pacers and the Captains in today's pairing.
Led by Margaret Minton, who shot 3-3 from three-point range, the Pacers maintained a reasonable spread throughout the first period. Peace led by two with just under 13 remaining before the break. CNU then went on a 13-2 run to go up by nine and maintained the lead at the half.
Peace stayed even with the Captains through the first five minutes of the second period. Three quick turnovers by the Pacers advanced Christopher Newport's lead to 13. The Captains held a double-digit lead for the reaminder of the game.
Minton tallied a team-high 15 points. Megan Bridges added nine points, three steals. Brenna Mickey, LeAnne Horne, and Angel Fuller grabbed six rebounds apiece with Karissa Herring leading with seven, adding two blocks.
CNU's Alysa Kerr led with 22 points, adding four assists, and three steals. Teammate Jessica Moore tallied a game-high 11 rebounds, adding eight points in the win.
Peace enjoyed a visit from 17 campers from the Raleigh Girls Club today in honor of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Pacer squad treated the 9-12 year old girls to a skills clinic before lunch and poster making with student-athlete volunteers from four of the program's other teams. The lively group added a special cheering section for the Pacers during the game.
Peace travels tomorrow to Hollins University for a non-league game versus the Green and Gold. The game is slated to tipoff at 2:00 pm in Roanoke. The Pacers remain on the road Wednesday to take on the Quakers of Guilford College for one last competition before the semester break. See you on the sidelines!
