Squirrels Set the Pace to Win

Raleigh, NC -- Peace College (7-13, 3-11 USAS) dropped its second conference basketball game this weekend with a 53-40 loss to Mary Baldwin.  Excessive fouling by the Pacers combined with a struggling second-half offense, gave the visitor's the edge and eventual win this afternoon.

The Squirrels took a six-point lead on a layup from leading scorer Sabrina Desper (22 points) with 6:20 remaining in the first period to match its largest of the half.  Peace managed a 7-3 run in the next six minutes to cut the lead to two going into the break.

But a quick six points from Mary Baldwin in the opening minutes of second-half action set the tone for the rest of the game.  MBC pushed that lead to as many as 17 with a 13-0 run late in the game.

First-year local Megan Sherrill notched a career-high nine points to lead the Pacers, adding three steals in the loss.  Angel Fuller grabbed 10 rebounds and tallied a career-high five blocks, second highest in single-game history for Peace.

Mary Baldwin's Denise Johnston added 14 points with five assists and four steals.  Kara Hawkins notched a game-high 15 rebounds in today's win over Peace.

Peace travels across town Wednesday to face Meredith for the second time this season.  The Pacers lead the series 1-0 with a 76-72 win in January.   Join the team back at the Hermann Center Saturday, February 13, as Peace hosts Greensboro College in this year's Pink Zone game.  See you on the sidelines!
