Minton, Long and Lyons are winners at awards ceremony
Led by Director of Athletics Kelly Johnson, Peace College celebrated the success of Pacer Athletics Wednesday night with the 15th annual Athletics Award Banquet. The coaches, administration and student-athletes reviewed the accomplishments of Peace College during the 2010-11 academic year.
Team MVPs were handed out during the ceremony, along with other sport-specific awards. Additionally, three other awards were handed out during the festivities.
Margaret Minton '11 won the Frazier Cup, awarded in honor of Dr. David S. Frazier, the eighth president of Peace College. The Frazier Cup goes to the individual who best represents the true meaning of "student-athlete." She must be classified as a junior or senior, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. This individual represents Peace College as an ambassador for all students through leadership, sportsmanship, community service and non-athletic campus activities and organizations.
Minton, who holds a 3.78 GPA, is a four-year letter winner in basketball and was a captain for the 2010-11 season. She missed four weeks in January and February due to a high-ankle sprain, but continued to lead from the sidelines and returned to play the final three weeks of the season.
A member of Alpa Chi, National College Honors Society, Minton has beeen awarded Academic All-Conference honors each year she has been at Peace. A two-time All-Sportsmanship Team member, Minton is also the Psychology Club Secretary and participated in the National Conference on Undergraduate Research this year.
Courtney Long '11 won the Bierce Award, given in memory of former Peace College student-athlete Jeannie Grey Bierce, who lost her battle with cancer in 2001.
Long, a team captain in softball, started all 42 games for the Pacers and finished in the top 10 in the USA South in seven different categories. She led the conference with 30 stolen bases and finished ninth with a .362 average, which was the top mark on the team. Long was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection this season.
Rachel Lyons '13 won the Scholar-Athlete Award. A sophomore guard on the basketball team, Lyons has a 3.91 GPA. On the court, she saw more action as the season progressed and started five of the final nine games of the years for the Pacers.
