Spirits edge Pacers in Jackie Ammons Tournament
Raleigh, N.C. - Jo-Jo Hall sank one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining to break a tie and the Salem Spirits held on for a 53-52 win in the opening round of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament over the host Peace Pacers.
Salem (1-1) advances to the championship round, where they will take on the Concordia Cobbers, who advanced with a 64-50 win over the Guilford Quakers in the opening game.
Crystal Alston hit two free throws to give Peace a 52-50 lead with 1:07 remaining. But Shamaz Denerson nailed a jumper to tie the game again with 47 seconds left.
The Pacers (0-2) had a good chance to go ahead again but three shots in the paint delivered neither a bucket nor a foul call. Alston then missed a 3-point shot and was whistled for a foul in the open court, sending Hall to the line for what proved to be the game-winner.
Peace had one last chance with the ball but was unable to get a shot off before time expired.
Unlike in the opening game, the Pacers played well at the start of the second half. They turned a three-point halftime deficit into a 43-35 lead with 10:05 remaining following two free throws by Rachel Lyons.
But Peace went cold down the stretch, which allowed the Spirits back in the game.
It was another poor shooting night for the Pacers, who hit just 19-72 shots from the field, including 1-14 from behind the 3-point arc. Alston was the leading scorer with 15 points while Lyons chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds for Peace.
Denerson led Salem with 21 points while Hall added 17.
The Pacers return to action in the consolation game, which tips off at 1:00 Saturday afternoon. They will square off against the Quakers.
