Peace drops conference opener to N.C. Wesleyan
Rocky Mount, N.C. - Peace opened up USA South Conference play on the road at N.C. Wesleyan and dropped a 79-65 decision to the Battling Bishops Wednesday night.
The Bishops (3-2, 1-0) used a 15-5 run midway through the first half to open up a 16-point lead and cruised to their first conference win.
Leann Breeden came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers in six minutes of action in the first half for N.C. Wesleyan. She finished the first half with 14 points and had 17 points for the game after adding another three in the second half.
Breeden was one of three players in double-digits for the hosts, who were led by Tiffany Bell, who finished with 19 points on 6-11 shooting from the floor, including 2-3 from beyond the arc. Derreon Cole added 15, on 4-6 shooting from the field and 6-9 from the free-throw line.
There were several positives in the game for the Pacers (0-5, 0-1), most notably from the charity stripe where they converted a season-high 31 attempts and shot 63.3 percent. Peace lost its previous game by two points after shooting 45.8 percent from the line.
Another positive was the job done on the glass by the Pacers, who out-rebounded the Bishops, 52-49. Freshman Callie Yohn grabbed 18 rebounds, eight more than any other player in a game for Peace this season.
Sophomore Crystal Alston established a team season-high with 19 points. Coach Kelly Johnson wants Alston to take the ball to the hoop and tonight she did just that, which resulted in 13 free-throw attempts, of which she converted 10.
But poor shooting continues to plague the Pacers, who hit just 15-57 attempts from the floor. Also, turnovers were a big problem for the squad. Peace had 27 turnovers, 10 more than N.C. Wesleyan. The Bishops held a 27-15 edge in points off turnovers.
The Pacers return home for their next game, when they host USA South foe Ferrum at 2:00 Saturday, December 3rd at the Hermann Student Center.
