Pacers grab first win of the season

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Peace Pacers traveled to Winston-Salem Wednesday night and emerged with their first victory of the season with a 71-58 win over Salem College. The win avenged a one-point loss to the Spirits earlier this year in the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament.

At the beginning of the game it looked like the Pacers were falling into the same old bad habits. They missed six of their first eight shots and fell behind, 9-4.

Then Crystal Alston, Krystal Williams and Kellie Hawley each converted a 3-point basket, with the latter's bucket giving Peace a 13-12 lead.

The game was tight the rest of the first half but the Pacers closed the period on a 6-0 run to go into halftime with a 36-32 lead.

Early in the second half, JoJo Hall hit two 3-point baskets as Salem went on an 8-0 run to re-take the lead.

The Spirits held the lead until a jumper by Callie Yohn with 7:50 remaining put Peace back on top by a 52-50 margin.

The Pacers closed the game with a 17-5 run to clinch their first victory of the season.

Once again, injuries limited Peace (1-7) to just seven healthy bodies for the game. Three of those seven reached double figures, led by Alston who scored 20 points.  She was backed by Yohn with 18 points and Williams with 12.

Despite having only two subs, the Pacers held a 23-2 edge in points off the bench. Peace also dominated on the backboards with a 46-30 rebounding edge. Yohn pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds for the visitors.

Salem (1-6) was led by Hall who scored a game-high 25 points.

The Pacers break for exams and do not return to the court until December 17th, when they host Loras at 2:00 PM in their final non-conference game of the year.
