Big effort against Greensboro comes up short

Raleigh, N.C. – Playing their first game in 18 days, the Peace Pacers came out with an inspired effort against No. 21 Greensboro College, but came out on the short end of a 71-56 score.

Peace (1-9, 0-3) went into halftime trailing by just three points,  and twice cut the deficit to a single point. But Greensboro turned up the defensive pressure, went on a 14-0 run and cruised to the victory. The Pride had five layups and four foul shots in the decisive run. The Pacers had five turnovers and missed seven shots in this span.

Bianca Richburg led Greensboro (6-1, 3-0) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Danielle Duncan added 17 points and 14 rebounds and Jena Cabe chipped in with 14 points.

Both teams showed the affects of their long layoffs early. Peace missed its first nine shots but trailed by just seven points when Rebecca Davis finally hit a jumper. While the Pride built a 16-4 lead, the Pacers rallied back with three consecutive 3-point baskets. Crystal Alston hit two from long range while Krystal Williams hit the other one from behind the arc.

Alston led the Pacers with 13 points while Williams had 11 points and 7 assists. Callie Yohn notched another double-double, as she had 10 points and 10 rebounds while battling Duncan in the low post.

While Yohn held her own against the league's premier post player, Peace as a team struggled on the inside. Greensboro had a 48-30 edge in rebounding, which led to a 42-16 edge in points in the paint.

But there were several positives to come out of the game. Most importantly, the Pacers finally started hitting some shots. After missing on their first nine attempts, Peace hit 20 of its remaining 49 shots and converted 42.3 percent from the floor in the second half.

The Pacers were also bolstered by the return of junior Mia Sloan, who did not play in the first half of the year. Sloan showed the ability to contribute all over the floor and logged 22 minutes in her first game of the season.

Peace returns to action Saturday, when it travels to Staunton, Va. to take on Mary Baldwin at 2:00 PM.
