Peace drops heartbreaker to Mary Baldwin

Staunton, Va. - The Peace Pacers led for nearly 39 minutes of the game but came out on the wrong end of a 49-47 decision in a road game versus the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels Saturday afternoon.

Mary Baldwin (3-4, 1-3) took its first lead of the game when Shanice Miles drained a 3-point bucket with 90 seconds remaining to go on top, 47-46.

Peace tied the game a minute later, when Krystal Williams hit one of two free throws. The game remained tied until Sabrina Desper converted both free throws with five seconds remaining for the final points of the game.

Desper finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Squirrels. Miles was the host's next highest scorer with 6 points, both coming on 3-pointers late in the second half.

The Pacers (1-10, 0-4) had their best shooting game of the season, as they connected on a season-high 41.5 percent of their shots, including 10-of-18 in the second half. The good shooting made their 27 turnovers all the more costly.

Derrica Jones led Peace with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Williams added 10 points and 7 boards.

There will be little time for the Pacers to dwell on the last-minute loss as they continue their road trip with a 2:00 PM game against conference foe Shenandoah on Sunday.
