Four-game road streak ends with loss at Averett
Danville, Va. – Coach Kelly Johnson knew that four consecutive road games would be a challenge for his young club. The trying stretch is over for Peace and not a moment too soon, as the Pacers dropped a 64-44 decision to the Averett Cougars on Saturday.
Peace played a solid first half but trailed by five points, 28-23, at intermission. The Cougars put away the game with a 17-7 run to open the second half and the Pacers were never able to get the deficit back to single digits.
Essence Burns and Mette Scheiman each had 13 points to lead Averett (9-5, 5-2). Abby Bailey came off the bench to add 10 points for the Cougars.
Earlier in the season, Peace (1-13, 0-7) was losing games due to poor shooting. Lately, that problem has mostly been taken care of and against Averett both teams had similar shooting percentages, with the Cougars holding a slight 37.3 percent to 35.8 lead.
Now, the big problem for the Pacers is getting beat on the boards. Averett held a 49-30 rebounding edge, which led to a 21-2 lead in second-chance points.
Crystal Alston led Peace with 13 points and Krystal Williams added 10. Callie Yohn had a team-high 7 rebounds.
The Pacers return home Wednesday night for their first game in Hermann Student Center in 17 days. They take on inter-city rival Meredith in a game slated for a 7:00 start.
