First-place Captains stomp Pacers

Raleigh, N.C. - After playing their best game of the season in their last appearance, the Peace Pacers reverted to their offensive struggles from the beginning of the year and fell to the first-place Christopher Newport Captains, 65-34, Saturday at the Hermann Center.

The Captains (13-3, 8-1) rattled the Pacers early, as they picked up full court and completely disrupted Peace's offensive rhythm. Even after Christopher Newport called off its press, the home team had trouble getting any offense going. On too many possessions, the ball handlers for the Pacers picked up their dribble with no idea what to do with the ball next.

On the other side of the ball, the Captains did not look especially sharp, but they dominated on the boards and boosted their shooting percentage with some easy follow shots. Nine offensive rebounds in the first half alone led to 10 second-chance points for Christopher Newport.

Kimmy Hopkins led all scorers with 13 points for the Captains. Camry Greene and Kiara Marks came off the bench to add 12 and 10 points, respectively. Green added a game-high 10 rebounds, to lead the visitors to a 54-35 edge on the boards.

Peace (2-14, 1-8) barely made any shots at all in the first half, as it connected on just 3-25 attempts in the opening 20 minutes. Things got slightly better in the second half but it becomes next to impossible to win a game where you shoot 19.6 percent from the floor for the game.

Derrica Jones led Peace with 8 points, while Crystal Alston added 6 points and 6 rebounds. The only offensive highlight came when new addition Kate McHale came on late in the game and scored her first points for the Pacers, as she calmly knocked down two free throws.

Next up for Peace is a home game Tuesday night against conference foe N.C. Wesleyan at 7:00 PM.
