Peace Soccer ends 13-game losing streak
Raleigh, N.C. – It was cold and rainy on Saturday but it was a beautiful day for the Peace College Soccer team.
Kayleigh Simmons scored the first two goals of her collegiate career and Daisy Vasilko recorded her first shutout in net to lead the Pacers to a 2-0 win over the Wesleyan (Ga.) Pioneers.
The win was the first of the year for Peace and it broke a 13-game losing streak. The last time the Pacers left the field with a victory was last October 2nd, when they won a 6-4 game at Mary Baldwin.
Peace (1-5) pressed the attack for the first time all season. It finished the game with 19 shots, more than what the team produced in the last four games combined. The Pacers' six corner kicks tied what the team had produced all season before Saturday.
Both of Simmons' goals came on shots after fouls deep in Pioneers' territory. On the first goal, she lifted the ball high over the keeper's head, giving Peace its first lead since the opening game of the season. Her second goal was a hard shot that Wesleyan goalie Abby Stephens stopped initially but she could not hold onto the ball and it trickled into the net.
Meanwhile, it was a relatively easy game for Vasilko, who finished with four saves. In the previous five games, Vasilko turned back 64 shots, an average of nearly 13 saves per game.
The Pacers will try to put two wins in a row as they host Piedmont (6-0-1) on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The Pioneers (0-3) travel to Meredith for an 11:00 AM game Sunday.
