Pacers Drop First League Match to Bishops

Raleigh, NC -- The Peace College Pacers (0-3, 0-1 USAS) dropped their first USA South match of the season to North Carolina Wesleyan College (3-1, 2-1 USAS) 9-0.  First-year Head Coach Kathy Jacobs was pleased with the effort of her squad, many of whom are new to competitive tennis.

Sophomore leader Kristen Starnes earned two games in her second set at No. 1 to a strong Emelie Lundgren of the Battling Bishops.  Starnes and doubles partner Haley Bright lost 8-0 at the top doubles spot.

No. 2 doubles team Elizabeth Burns and Brittany Lynn played well versus NC Wesleyan in spite of an 8-1 finish.

Senior Carol Ann Duke, who returned to the squad this spring after sitting out last year with an injury, pushed her No. 5 opponent to a 6-2 first-set finish.  She lost 6-0 in the final set of the day.

Peace travels to Christopher Newport Saturday, March 27, to face the Captains at 1:00 pm.  The team returns to Ragland Courts next Tuesday, March 30, to challenge Methodist University, the 2009 regular season champs and this year's current leader.  Doubles play is slated to begin at 3:30 pm.  See you on the sidelines!
