Tennis Wins First

Raleigh, NC - The Peace Pacers (1-7, 1-5 USAS) tennis squad notched their first win of the 2010 season in today's final home match versus USA South foe Ferrum College (0-10, 0-7 USAS).  Amidst the spring heat and heavy North Carolina pollen, the competitive 6-3 win included three matches forced to a tiebreaker win.

To begin the day, No. 2 doubles partners Elizabeth Burns and Brittany Lynn defeated the Panthers 8-0.  Kristen Starnes and Haley Bright followed suit at the No. 1 spot with an 8-2 victory.

Starnes defeated Ferrum's Lea McMillan 6-4 in her first set at No. 1 singles.  McMillan battled and won the second 6-3 to force a tiebreaker.  Starnes came out on top 10-8 for the win.

Lynn took her first set at No. 4 singles winning the 7-5 tiebreaker.  She finished the match 6-1.  Burns was down early in her first set at No. 2 singles but came back to win 6-3, 6-4.

Bright battled in her first set to win 7-5 and finished the match with a 6-0 second.

First-year player Whitney McMillan dropped her first set at No. 6 singles 6-3.  She forced a tiebreaker set winning 7-5 in the second for her first career set win.  Panther Ashley Ellis notched a 6-3 third set for the match.

First-year Naomi King earned her first win of the season in an 8-5 exhibition match early in the day.

The Pacers wrap-up the regular season with three road matches beginning Tuesday, April 6, at Averett University.  The team plays at Meredith College Wednesday at 3:30 pm.  See you on the sidelines!
