Two Peace College Teams Win Sportsmanship Award

During the 2004-2005 academic year the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted a Conference-wide Sportsmanship Award. Today, the Peace College tennis team was announced as a winner, joining the soccer team as 2010-2011 winners for Peace.

"We are proud of both the soccer and tennis teams for the sportsmanship they showed this year under the leadership of their coaches," Director of Athletics Kelly Johnson said. "These young ladies represented Peace College as true student athletes both on the field and court as well as in the classroom. They were competitors yet played their respective sports with class and integrity."

Tennis coach Kathy Jacobs indicated her team's award was truly a group effort.

"Our selection for the Sportsmanship Award for our conference is quite an honor considering all of the great teams involved," Jacobs said. "The student-athletes on the tennis team are fantastic young women and they have played with their heart and souls during the year.  We have played against tough competition all year and they never gave up, nor did they show anything but positive attitudes on the court.

"Having the opportunity to participate in the USA South Conference has allowed these student-athletes the opportunity to test themselves and find out what they are really capable of achieving.  That's one of the reasons why we do what we do!"

For every sport, each team member votes for the teams he/she deems to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award.

"It is an honor to be recognized by our fellow schools for the USA South Sportsmanship Team Award for the 2010 season," soccer coach Keith Jenkins said. "Although our student-athletes played tough during the season, we were able to represent Peace College appropriately as our administration, faculty, and students would expect from us.

"Each time we put on the Peace College jersey, we realize that we are representing more than just ourselves on the field and we want to act appropriately. It's ok for us to play hard and physical but we can do it while respecting our opponents, fans, and the officials.

"Our individual sportsmanship award winners, Hannelore Manchester and Chelsea Noyes, were shining examples of the traits one would expect from a sportsmanship award winner."
