Volleyball Splits in League Action
Winchester, VA-The Pacer volleyball team split in today's USA South tri-match at Shenandoah University (7-9, 1-9 USAS). Peace (9-11, 4-5 USAS) defeated SU 3-0 in the opening match before dropping match two in three to the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan (12-7, 8-0 USAS), who remained undefeated in league play.
Peace took care of Shenandoah quickly in a 25-14 set one. The Hornets battled back in set two with the teams tied at 24 on a Pacer error. Amber Lowe (Cedar Grove, NC) sealed the win for Peace with a kill assisted by Bree Crook (Reno, NV) followed by a service ace.
PC libero Brandi Pinnell (Louisburg , NC) gave Peace a 6-0 lead in set three only to have the Hornets return scoring 9 of the next 12 points to tie the set at 9. Another run courtesy of Megan Melchiorre (Durham, NC) gave Peace a comfortable seven-point lead at 16-9. SU battled but the Pacers maintained the lead and notched a 25-20 win for the match.
Leah Chandler (Chapel Hill, NC) was the big hitter in today's win over the Hornets. She went 13 of 19 for .632 hitting. Outside hitter Amber Lowe (Cedar Grove, NC) notched 11 kills and 14 digs in the win.
The Bishops took early control of the Pacers' second match of the day with a 19-11 lead. Lowe managed a five-point service run to bring her team within two, but Peace would get no closer. NCWC took the set 25-21.
The next two sets favored the Bishops. Peace capitalized on three late Wesleyan errors to chip away at an eight-point lead and hold at set point, but a Pacer service error closed the score at 25-19.
The Bishops sealed the sweep 25-18 on three late kills and a block.
Chandler and Lowe combined for 15 kills to lead Peace against NC Wesleyan. Lowe earned 16 digs.
NCWC's Kelly George notched a match-high 24 digs. Teammates Brittany Insley and Meredith Smith compiled a combined 23 kills.
