Spirits Hand Peace a Disappointing Loss

Raleigh, NC-The Peace College (9-13, 4-6 USAS) volleyball team took a disappointing 3-1 loss to Salem College (5-11) in tonight's Dig Pink match at the Hermann Student Center.  This non-league match marks the third straight loss for the Pacers and the second after a ten-day break from competition.  The team defeated Salem in both of the previous attempts this season.

Salem enjoyed an early 9-12 lead over Peace in set one.  The teams would exchange points throughout the remainder of the set with the Pacers in the lead at 22-19.  Unfortunately, Salem completed six of the next seven plays to secure a 25-23 win and take a 1-0 match lead.

Set two played much the same way with the visitors on top 25-22 to go up by two.

The Pacers played above par in the third led by five kills from Amber Lowe (Cedar Grove, NC) and two from Alexandra Parker (Weaverville, NC).  The team cleaned up their offense committing only three Pacer errors compared to nine in each of the first two sets.  Six Peace service aces added to the successful attack.

The success was short lived when Salem stole the lead from Peace in the fourth during a five-point service run from the visitor's Christine Tillman.  Peace rallied to retake the lead at 12-11 on a kill from Leah Chandler (Chapel Hill, NC).  But another long run from the Spirits' Alyssa Alcos capped off with 2 of Tillman's 12 kills gave the opponents the lead for good.  Salem sealed the 25-21 win on 1 of 31 Pacer attack errors.

Lowe managed a match-high 13 kills and Elizabeth Evanoff (Manns Harbor, NC) led with 8 kills in 24 attempts (.250).  Libero Brandi Pinnell (Louisburg, NC) notched 18 digs in the loss.

Salem's Tillman earned the only double-double of the night with a dozen kills and 18 digs, adding five blocks.

Peace hosts Shenandoah University and North Carolina Wesleyan Saturday in a USA South tri-match beginning at 11:00 am.  See you on the sidelines!
