Pacers fall to No. 5 Captains
Raleigh, N.C. – The William Peace Pacers hosted the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains and came out on the short end of a 3-0 decision Tuesday night. It was the 13th consecutive win for the Captains.
Christopher Newport (21-2, 7-0) jumped on top early, as it raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and cruised to an easy 25-8 win.
The Pacers (8-14, 1-5) put up a strong effort in the second set. A kill by freshman Connor Davis made it 9-9 and Peace took a one-point lead on the next play after a bed set by the Captains. But the visitors regrouped and rallied to win 16 of the next 23 points and emerged with a 25-17 win in the second.
The third set was similar to the second, as the Pacers kept it close until midway through before the Captains took control down the end. Christopher Newport took the match with a 25-16 win in the third set.
Crystal Alston had 4 kills while Brooke Norris had 9 assists and Maddie Irvin had 11 digs to lead Peace.
The Pacers return to action Saturday, when they square off in a tri-match in Georgia against Mary Baldwin and LaGrange.
