Peace College Advances with 6-3 Win Over Mary Baldwin College

BURLINGTON, NC – The Peace Pacers beat the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College, 6-3, in the first game of the USA South Tournament for both teams. Peace junior, Morgan Weathington, had three hits, two runs and one RBI in the game.

Sophomore Pacer, Candice McDanel, had an RBI single in the second inning to give Peace their first run of the game. Peace continued the scoring in the third inning adding three runs on two outs. The inning started with a single to shortstop from Weathington. After a foul-out from Melissa Williams, Weathington stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Mary Baldwin pitcher, Jessica Hogle, struck out Ashley Stansbury and then walked Kasie Moore. With runners on first and third, Amanda Rothwell doubled to left, scoring two.  Lindsey Moore then singled to left field, scoring Rothwell making the score 4-0. Lindsey Haver advanced Moore to second on a bunt single. After one more walk, Courtney Long fouled out to end the inning.

Peace scored two more in the bottom of the sixth with hits from Long, Weathington and Tatum Townsend. Weathington and Townsend each had one RBI. Mary Baldwin started the seventh with a double from Courtney Clausi followed by a walk from Victoria Barrett. After a strikeout from Sammy Thomas, Amber Ralston doubled to right center scoring Clausi and advancing Barrett to third. After one more strikeout Kelse Still doubled to left earning two RBI’s making the score 6-3. Meghan Moyer grounded out to shortstop for the last out of the game.

Stansbury pitched six innings and got the win for Peace with nine strikeouts and no runs allowed. Mcleod pitched the last inning for the Pacers and allowed three runs off of three hits. Amber Ralston pitched three innings for Mary Baldwin allowing two runs. Jessica Hogle also pitched three innings, had five strikeouts and allowed four runs.

Peace College will play Greensboro College at 1:00 pm today.  Mary Baldwin will play at 3:00 pm against the loser of the Ferrum/Meredith game being played at 11 am.
